Close Up
Installation 2009, (video and sound – loop)

Still Straight from Video
The idea for Close Up originally came around the same time as making Park, The Space Between and shares some of the same concerns. I was interested in creating an image and sound from a source that couldn’t be seen. Made up of 10 different shots of my arm being lit by a single match, the duration of the shot is dictated by the time it takes for the match to burn out. The soundtrack which is played through one single speaker hidden to the right of the image is created by a microphone being placed in close proximity to the burning match. The sound is quite strange, at times animal like and other times it can sound electrical. The image is shot in HD and projected onto a black painted frame hung on a wall, it has a rich painting like quality about it. The source of the sound, light and therefore image is never revealed.
